About Us
Thoothukudi, known as the “Pearl City,” has a long and vibrant history rooted in its pearl fishery and maritime trade. Once part of the Pandya kingdom and later ruled by the Cholas, the port city attracted colonial powers—the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, who took control in 1782. A separate district was formed on 20 October 1986 and named after freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar, and in 1997 it was officially renamed Thoothukudi District.
