V. O. Chidambaram Pillai (VOC), born in 1872 in Ottapidaram, was a brave freedom fighter and founder of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, the first Indian-owned shipping service that challenged British control. He led the Coral Mill Strike in Thoothukudi and was arrested in 1908, facing harsh imprisonment. Despite losing his wealth, he remained a symbol of courage and self-reliance. VOC died in 1936, remembered as Kappalottiya Tamilan for his bold contribution to India’s freedom.
